How old do I need to be to drive in Tanzania?

For this trip, you must be at least 20 years old and have held a driver's license for at least 2 years.

An international driver's license is required. You can easily apply for this at your local municipality, for a small fee that varies by country or municipality.

What documents do I need to travel to Tanzania?
  • An international passport that is valid for at least 6 months after your return.
  • A visa for Tanzania (easy to apply for online – we will send you the right info after your booking).
  • Proof of vaccination against Yellow Fever (required upon arrival from a high-risk country).
  • An international driving permit is required to drive in Tanzania (your national driving license is not sufficient).

Do I need vaccinations for my trip to Tanzania?

The vaccination against Yellow Fever is highly recommended (and is mandatory if you travel through certain countries).

Additionally, doctors often recommend Hepatitis A, typhoid, and sometimes an extra dose of polio.

Since malaria is present in Tanzania, a preventive malaria treatment (antimalarial) is also recommended in some cases.

Make sure to schedule a travel consultation with your doctor or a travel clinic for personalized advice in advance.

Can I customize the trip to my own preferences?

The Tanzania Nomads road trip is a well-planned concept, where we take care of the optimal route, accommodations, and logistics.

You can, of course, extend your trip on your own initiative – for example, by staying extra days in Arusha or Zanzibar after your road trip.

Can I cancel my trip?

You can always cancel your road trip. Here you can find the terms and conditions for that.

What about insurance?

Travel Insurance € 59
We offer the option to purchase travel insurance. You can find all the information about our travel insurance here. If you already have your own travel insurance, it's best to check if it covers you in Tanzania as well.

Cancellation Insurance € 89

Cancellation insurance: € 89 per person – highly recommended

Make sure to check if your own insurance also covers Tanzania and self-drive.

Is there on-site support?

Absolutely. Upon arrival, you'll be welcomed by our local team in Arusha.

They will ensure a smooth handover of your vehicle and are ready to assist you at departure.

Additionally, you'll have access to our offline app, and just before departure, you'll be added to a WhatsApp group with other participants from your trip. Someone from our team will also be available in that group in case of emergencies.

What’s in the roadbook?

Our roadbook is your essential travel guide through Tanzania.

You'll find the complete itinerary, explained day by day, with highlights along the way, tips for beautiful stopovers, dining spots, and practical info for each region.

The route includes both classics and some surprising, lesser-known places for a perfect travel experience.

What are the extra costs?

• Fuel: expect to spend an average of €300 to €400 for the entire route per vehicle.
• Entrance fees for national parks: between $70 and $100 per day per person, depending on the park (prices exclude vehicle costs).
• Vehicle surcharge in the parks: an average of $40 to $60 per day.
• Meals outside the parks: average of €15 to €25 per person per day.
• Drinks, snacks, and souvenirs.
• Tips for guides or staff (optional, but common).
• Optional activities, such as a guided game drive, hike, or coffee experience.

Is the car manual or automatic?

You will be driving a 4×4 with a manual transmission (standard in Tanzania), either a Hilux or a Land Cruiser.

How does the payment process work?

Within 10 days of your registration, you will need to pay a deposit of 35% to confirm your trip. After that, you have until 45 days before departure to adjust your options and pay the remaining amount. If you make changes, the deposit will be automatically recalculated.

Additionally, shortly before departure, you will also need to pay a security deposit if you haven’t opted for damage waiver for your car.

There are various payment options available. If your payment failed, it’s likely that there was an error when entering the reference number or you exceeded your account limit.

Give back to nature through Greentripper

The planet offers us so much beauty to admire, but if we want to continue enjoying it in the future, we need to protect it today. That's why we make extra efforts to reduce the impact of our trips, and you can reliably contribute to a climate project from Greentripper in the booking form, which balances out the CO2 emissions from your transport.

By contributing to a certified project, you help protect beautiful forests and the wildlife within them, support local communities, and reduce the CO2 emissions from your transport. If you choose to contribute towards the emissions from your transport, Travelbase will also make an additional contribution towards the emissions on-site. After your trip, you'll receive an official carbon credit certificate.
